After listening to you for one year
a new project for "Partenia Diocese":
The E-catechism

On January 13th, the Partenia Homepage blew out its first candle: one year of trials and discoveries, waiting for your response in the E-mail postbox. In this newly discovered country, a kind of community has come to life and is growing.

During the first year I received thousands of letters. They raised questions concerning yourselves, and they often show how very painful they can be for you: exclusion, sexual ethics, loneliness; some questions are linked to society and its problems: wars, violence, environment; there were also religious questions coming from people of different walks of life: how can one believe in something?

Why divisions? As a catholic bishop, I am supposed to give answers, but people expect something else than a catechism learned by rote.
What can I do with my limited means, scarcity of time, and lack of technical knowledge?

Little by little I gathered a team, and together we looked at your mail. We answered your messages (not always), sometimes with some delay, the best we could. Sometimes we felt helpless: to answer a letter properly we would have needed pages, or even a book ... But there are already so many books available. The web being a new means of communication, we have to discover what suits it.
We suggest: together, let us write the E-catechism.

Catechism: often the word is off-putting to many Christians. We have known these penny catechisms in which someone who is in charge asks questions which are not ours, in order to give us the right answers. It is for fear of being brain-washed that many Catholics have ceased to consider themselves Catholics. An they do not want it for their children.

But at the same time, there is an expectation: people ask what the Churches think. What is expected is not dogma but meaning: meaning for men and women of today, which fits their experience; a meaning which makes life different with a sense of trust and not despair. A meaning which gives another vantage point of view on the world, on others, and ... on God. (Christians use this word which may be at the root of the question).
The "Electronic catechism" enables us to introduce a catechism from a different stand: the E-catechism.

We are a team of men and women from different backgrounds. Every month, under &laqno;E-catechism» with the motto: "We talk openly with each other", we will launch a reflection on a topic you suggested, starting from a key-word. We will start with:

· to be a Christian today?
· to be excluded, a human problem. God's problem?

Please, send your answers on these topics, taking into account your life experience, your human network (religious or otherwise). Comment on the meaning we suggest, whether it makes sense or is nonsense.

We shall colleot your answers, and this will allow us to rewrite the topic with your reactions, whether they are positive or negative. In any case, talking "face to face" will no doubt widen the scope.

You may ask people around you whom you know and who have a special expertise. This is the beginning of a real exchange between people and will benefit mutual understanding.

This is obviously a long-term task, even a never-ending one. This is the major reason to start here and now.
Let us turn towards the future.

Please, obey ! this is what anyone in authority says, whether parents, church or lay people. The answer covers a whole gamut from infantile submission to denial ; it normally springs from listening and dialogue.

" Better obey God than men " said the first apostles to the authorities who wanted to forbid them preach what was cause of trouble. True, Jesus himself had trespassed laws and taboos deliberately. " The Sabbath (institution) is meant for people and not people for the Sabbath ". He thus set the only norm for obedience or disobedience which is : when God's truth echoes people's truth and the other way round.

Christianity as an institution cannot escape that pitfall : it sings the tune of obedience and is cagey about disobedience.

But if it is really alive, it must put up with disobedience and the right to trespass. A set orderly environment is necessary to live together, but it cannot channel life. Life together is larger than frameworks. Events can challenge usual landmarks.

The unemployed and those excluded from mainstream society who found themselves on the borderline, show that there is set disorder. Individuals and groups who muster their courage to demonstrate or disobey while appealing to higher values, forgotten or despised, open a prophetic future. This was the case of those who called French young recruits not to go and fight in the Algerian war in the 60s.

And now, the call to civil disobedience in order to keep welcoming home foreigners without proper documents.

Trespassing demands a sense of responsibilities but also great humility. If it is genuine, this disobedience is obedience to God's call.

" That was a revelation to me " ! Who has never said it. One suddenly sees in a new light people, life, the world after some kind of event like meeting someone, experiencing something or reading some book. This has made the person different. To grow is to change as an individual or a group, having such discoveries as signposts.

In human history, many religions have been " revealed " : in precise circumstances, men or women have perceived in a new light their lives in this world, confronted with the One. They have spontaneously seen in this revelation a free gift : God revealing himself. They have conveyed this belief to their family, their neighbourhood, sometimes they proclaimed it publicly, trying to put in words what is and remains a personal experience difficult to put in words.

Christianity is the revelation of God in Jesus Christ. " God spoke through the prophets at many times and in various ways, he has now, spoken to us by his Son ". (Hebrew 1,1) Jesus'experience was so full and unique that you can assert that " all has been said ", so that you feel compelled to tell it.

This does not mean that revelation is " locked up ", on the contrary. It continues to expand through our experience. It is not enclosed in books. It gets richer of all the spiritual experiences of human beings. Jesus himself told us that the Spirit would lead us to the whole truth.

What has been handed down becomes new in everyone's life, but each one is call to enrich the given revelation of his/her own discoveries, which is proper to his/her life. In this way we are all called to become " prophets ". But we must be aware that there are false prophets who take their dreams for revelation.

But being afraid of creativity can lead to the opposite danger : one sees revelation as a whole, well built, coming from outside, something to be received . It is the negation of what the word says. For " the Kingdom of God is like a treasure from which the owner brings out new things, as well as old "(Mt 13,52)
